Very Good article on Beltran.

Saw this on Rob Neyer’s blog:

best line-

“But it turns out people don’t want to hear about sabermetric stats at parties”

i’m not a fan of Beltran, but have nothing against him- i’ll tell you it was the last at-bat 2006 NLCS when he took the 3rd strike that killed him with Mets fans

I can imagine they have some resentment toward him because of that, as the author mentioned. But they cannot let that override what he has done, not only his career, but for the Mets as well. He is a good player.

i’ll agree with you, but they are one tough crowd to please, those mets fans-

The issue often comes down to performance in relation to salary. When they’re making the minimum they’re future superstars; when they’re highly paid, they’re not earning their keep. It’s not Beltran’s fault the Mets paid him a boatload of money. All he ever did was accept a great deal. Who wouldn’t?

The Boston Red Sox placed shortstop Julio Lugo on the 15-day disabled list with a left quad strain on Saturday

my sincere condolences…

I don’t wish for Lugo to get injured, but I am a strong, strong advocate for Jed Lowrie, and this is going to get him some time.

I also think that maybe Beltran’s low averages (for a star) may be one reason why Mets fans don’t ever think he isn’t playing up to what he should be.

I just saw that Lugo’s OBP is higher than Ellsbury’s. Weird, huh?

Anyway, I’m not sure Lowrie is the answer either, but he is definitely worth a shot. He does play all-out every time. Here’s a chance for him to showcase his talent.

I was aware of Lugo’s above average OBP, but his power numbers are pathetic. His slugging is at .330, and his defense has been bad, as we all know. His slugging, among qualified hitters, is 79th out of the 83 with enough AB’s in the AL. And that comes in a hitters park.
