Chad Gaudin not THIS bad.

A 5.60 ERA in a pitchers park you say?  Why, that is terrible.  And that is what Gaudin's ERA is, even though he benefits from Petco, seemingly, having his back.

But he hasn't really been that bad.  His FIP is 4.05.  His homers are at only .86 per nine.  "Luck" has simply  driven his ERA up, with a .330 BABIP, and a 64% LOB%, well, those will do that to one's ERA.

Gaudin has become very adept at striking batters out this season.  That is where the "he hasn't really been that bad" mostly stems from.  9.43 K's per game frame, which is easily a career high.  I wonder how much this has to do with a new, inferior league adjusting to Gaudin.  But nevertheless, that statistic is pretty, and maybe Chad is learning how to retire hitters more frequently, without the ball ever being put into play.

Obviously, there is one huge concern for Gaudin.  And that is his 4.88 BB's per nine.  Way, way too high.  This has always been a serious problem for Chad.  Never has he posted a good BB rate as a starter.

He is only 26, his K/9 is as high as ever.  And his FIP indicates he is at least better than his 5.60 ERA suggests.

If he ever stops walking batters at such a high rate, and that is a BIG if, he may be a decent starter.  But until then, it looks as though the back end is where he will belong.
