Know the personnel.
Rick Ankiel used to be a pitcher.
A pitcher.
Meaning what? In conjunction with what we've seen, we know that he has a cannon for an arm.
So when the bases are loaded, and with no one out. Maybe we shouldn't send Luis Castillo as he rounds third on a single up the middle. Maybe Razor Shines should have held Castillo there.
Especially with Murphy and David Wright to follow. And again, especially with Ankiel's arm being one of the variables.
With two outs I send Castillo there. With less than two, I hold him. With the exception of that occuring early in the game with the pitcher on deck, then I would have sent him with one out.
And with all that, Castillo was safe. But only because Ankiel's throw was off line. Only because of luck really. Shines had no idea where Ankiel's throw was going to end up, it simply went off line because that was what happened.
Shines should be fired for this decision.
Joking
of course. But I am under the impression that one should be
conservative in these situations. No one out, with the aforementioned
variables, Castillo should not have been sent. I don't really care
that he was safe, it was the wrong decision.
